CLH toolkit 02: Context and concepts

What is community-led housing?

Community-led housing is about local people playing a leading and fundamental role in solving their specific housing problems, creating long-term affordable homes and strong, resilient communities in ways that are difficult to achieve through mainstream housing alone. The four main principles of CLH are that it is:

  • Led by the community
  • Owned, managed or stewarded by the community
  • For collective benefit
  • Affordable
