Every day, people in Wales go online to stay in touch, get the latest news, or simply scroll for a bit of downtime. But the internet isn’t always straightforward, it can be confusing, overwhelming, and sometimes harmful.

Unffiltered, a Welsh Government–funded pilot delivered by Cwmpas, is here to make the online world feel a bit easier to navigate for people living in Caerphilly, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil.

Why Unffiltered exists

The internet can be brilliant. It connects us, helps us learn new things and give us a voice. But it can also spread misinformation, fuel division, and push content designed to spark strong emotions rather than helpful conversations. Unffiltered helps you understand how online platforms really work, so you can feel more confident, curious and in control of what you see.

What you’ll learn

Unffiltered isn’t about telling anyone what to think. It’s about giving people the tools to understand:

how apps, algorithms and AI shape what appears on our screens
how to spot misleading or harmful online content
when to pause and question something before clicking “share”
how to stay safe and protect your wellbeing online

You’ll also get a look at how digital technology is changing, and what that means for all of us in the future.

Why this matters

What we click on shapes what we see next. Over time this can trap us in ‘filter bubbles’ and ‘echo chambers’, showing us more of the same and shutting out anything different. That can make it harder to spot misinformation or stay grounded when content is designed to provoke anger, fear or outrage. Improving your ability to separate fact from fiction (what we call ‘media literacy’) helps people feel more confident online and helps create healthier, more respectful conversations across our communities.

Everyone plays a part

Anyone can be influenced by what they see online, that’s normal. But small actions make a big difference: pausing, checking the source, and noticing our own reactions can all help make the internet a more positive place for everyone.
